Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 29) — In the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball finals, the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons took an early lead in the best-of-three series with a convincing 97-67 win over the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers. The opening match occurred on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Harold Alarcon was a standout performer for the Fighting Maroons during the first game of the series, scoring 21 points and contributing two rebounds and two assists.
UP gained momentum after a closely contested first quarter, pulling ahead in the second quarter thanks to their practical long-range shooting.
The Green Archers faced challenges throughout the game, with a series of turnovers impeding their efforts to mount a comeback. In contrast, the Fighting Maroons seized every chance to press their attack.
This triumph by UP marks the largest victory margin ever recorded in the Final Four era of UAAP finals history.
Other notable contributions for UP came from Francis Lopez, who added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and JD Cagulangan, who secured 13 points and three assists.
Michael Phillips was a key player for La Salle, earning 19 points and grabbing nine rebounds.
The second game of the series is set for December 3, to be held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
