Lawmaker Urges PH to Rally Global Support Against China’s WPS Moves

A Philippine legislator emphasizes the importance of unity among nations to counteract Chinese assertiveness in the West Philippine Sea.

In light of the escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), a Philippine lawmaker has called for the country to lead in crafting a joint resolution with other nations to condemn China’s recent aggressive actions in the maritime region.

The legislator, whose name has not been disclosed yet, believes that a joint global stance against China’s assertiveness will underline the situation’s urgency and compel the international community to rally behind a peaceful resolution.

“The West Philippine Sea is not just our concern; it’s a global concern. The recent actions by China undermine the international maritime laws put in place to ensure peace and stability in the region,” the lawmaker said during a press briefing earlier today.

Many ASEAN countries, including Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei, have overlapping claims with China in the South China Sea, of which the WPS is a part. This strategic maritime region has been a hotbed for territorial disputes for decades, with countries scrambling to secure their exclusive economic zones and territorial waters.

Analysts believe that a unified international response could deter future aggressive moves by China and encourage diplomatic dialogue.

“The strength lies in unity. It sends a powerful message if various nations come together with a common voice. And in this case, it’s a message that aggressive territorial expansion is not the way forward,” noted Maria Salazar, a political analyst based in Manila.

It remains to be seen whether the Philippine government will heed the call to draft such a resolution or if other nations will join the cause. The international community will be watching closely, as the decisions made in the coming weeks could have lasting implications for regional stability.
